What is your usual bedtime? Do you like that, or would you rather it be different?
My bedtime was getting a bit wacky a few weeks ago, but I've gotten back on track to fall asleep around 11 pm.
Soup
When it comes to advice, do you give more or receive more?
I only give advice to good friends, so I think it's an even flow between.
Salad
Describe a memorable meal you've had.
Dan and I ate at the Top of the World Restaurant at the Stratosphere in Las Vegas on our honeymoon. We were 800 feet off the ground in a revolving restaurant with all glass walls seated in a booth on the second tier overlooking the restaurant and all the glorious views. The food was fabulous. We got the Three Course Dinner for Two which included a palate cleanser of cantaloupe sorbet in a frozen lemon rind shell. Such a random detail to remember, but the sorbet was that good! Also, I ate fingerling potatoes for the first time. I had always refused to eat them before because, well, THEY LOOK LIKE FINGERS. They are still freaky, but man, are they delicious! We also got the wine flight, so we had a different glass of wine with each course. To top the whole meal off, we timed our reservation perfectly so we could watch the sun set over the desert and watch the strip light up. It was easily the most money we've ever spent on a meal, but it was completely worth it.
Main Course
Name a work of fiction that affected the way you think about something.
Anna Karenina by Tolstoy made me realize that the Russian classics are neither dull or difficult. That book is a one big soap opera written as a fine novel.
Dessert
What is your favorite type of fruit juice?
Tangerine, of course!

My fuzzy pink sweater and Garfy's little pink toe-pads.

In 3 words, describe this past week.
Bi-polar: So many emotions involved in rejecting a good job for the right reasons.
Windy: This weekend was soooo windy! I was keeping track of Dan's floor mats while he vacuumed his car on Friday, and I thought I could lean into the wind and be held up it was blowing so hard.
Gavin-y: I don't go anywhere. I just wander (That's for my siblings.)

Where was I?
Ok, for those of you that didn't know, I got offered a job and accepted it.
And for those of you that didn't know, I decided not to take it after all.
The whole thing was a sweet deal except for the hours. With Dan working so early in the day and 10 hours a day, this job would have created a situation where we see each other a half hour each day during the week and then on Saturday. Blah. So I decided to keep looking. I decided to hook up with a temp agency in the meantime. I had my interview this morning and should be working pretty soon. When I got home I was looking around my various job search websites, and found a listing today for a library technician at the UK Education Library. Needless to say, that would be AWESOME.
Nothing much else is going on. We're still busy getting things set up around here to have much fun. Dan working 50 hours a week kind of cuts in on the fun too, but we must keep Garfield in the lifestyle to which he has grown accustomed, and the overtime won't last forever. I think that' s all for now. My brain is rather boring because I need to eat lunch.

Where on your body do you have a scar, and what caused it?
I have a puncture looking scar on the inside of my right ankle from an IV that was inserted there when I had spinal meningitis as a baby. I have no memories from being sick because I was so young. I never think about the scar. I had to look to see which ankle it was on just a second ago.
Soup
What is something that has happened to you that you would consider a miracle?
Well, I bet everyone considers finding their one true love a miracle. Our story just happens to involve many miles, this here interweb, and the website that shut down 2 weeks after we met on it.

Name a television personality who really gets on your nerves.
Regis Philbin. That was my sister's answer and it just happens to block out of my mind any other I could give. He's just that annoying.

What was a funny word you said as a child (such as "pasketti" for "spaghetti")?
Pampoo for shampoo.

Fill in the blank: I have always thought ______ was ______.

What sound, other than the normal ringing, would you like your telephone to make?
Right now my phone plays the theme from Chariots of Fire which is rather appropriate because I always seem to be running into the next room to answer it. Other than that, I think I would like church bells.
Soup
Describe your usual disposition in meteorological terms (partly cloudy, sunny, stormy, etc.).
Lately I go back and forth from cloudy with no precipitation to my usual sunny with no clouds.
Salad
What specific subject do you feel you know better than any other subjects?
Food history. Strange, I know.

Imagine you were given the ability to remember everything you read for one entire day. Which books/magazines/newspapers would you choose to read?
Oh, that's easy. Foreign language text books. Foreign language just won't stick to my brain.
Dessert
If a popular candy maker contacted you to create their next confection, what would it be like and what would you name it?
I have to go with my sister's answer. It's too cute!
Busterbar, and it would be white chocolate with dark chocolate chips, since he's white with brown spots!

In a New York Minute
One of my best pally-pals landed in NYC just a half hour ago to start her new life. Mon plus cher ami, vous brillerez comme les lumières de Broadway! I'm so proud of my Bowlsie-Bowls!
I was feeling a bit down in the dumps the past couple of days. Laura and Olivia both gave me good pep talks and ideas to feel less in a rut. And then today I got not one but two calls about interviews! Go me! [Spirit Fingers]
I also found a Greyhound rescue group with which I might start to volunteer. They are located in Louisville about an hour and a half away, but they do events in Lexington as well. They have one coming up this Saturday at the Wild Oates near our apartment. I plan on heading over to check them out and get some Greyhound love in the process. I'm also considering some local places around Lexington to start volunteering. It seems like it might be a good way to meet some new people.
Lastly, I want to give a V-day shout out to my pal "good ol' Jer." The best Valentine's date I had until the husband happened to mosey into the number one spot. You could give lessons to straight dudes on how to treat women. If only I could find the pic of you macking on the ladies at our wedding, I would post it here. Alas, everyone's imaginations will just have to suffice :)

An Early Valentine's Day Present
Last night we sat on a couch and watched a very tense episode of Grey's Anatomy on a television, and I drank out of an actual glass. Ah, civilization. We still ate dinner off of plastic plates, but it was only because our real plates were in the dishwasher getting clean after their long haul. We hit a point yesterday morning where we looked around and realized that all of our stuff just wasn't going to fit into our 500 sq ft apartment. Luckily that point came before it was all unpacked. We were renting a U-haul van anyway to pick up our new couch and a new dresser, so it made sense to take care of hauling all our extra stuff to a storage unit. We found one for $40 a month close by, and when we arrived, we were told that if we paid for 5 months, we would get the sixth for free. Sweet! For $200, our stuff is safe and out of sight until we find a house.
As I watched Dan work his tetras magic on the storage unit, I announced, "Let's call this our Valentine's present to each other." He looked at me like I was starting to lose my mind a bit. "I know it's not very romantic in the traditional sense," I said,"but this is peace of mind, and that is rather romantic." He still looked at me like I was nutty. Eventually I got him to admit that he didn't have any other ideas yet for V-day simply because we've been so busy moving. "Well then, this is me letting you off the hook. Please, take it," I said with a smile. And so he did, and called me awesome.
The thing is, when you have a guy as wonderful and dreamy as Dan is, every day is Valentine's Day. When we first started dating I used to call him "Prince Charming" because he just seemed too good to be true. The first time we spent a week together in Massachusetts, I left a pin of a frog wearing a crown pinned to a card that I attached to his fridge with a magnet. I didn't tell him it was there, and he found it a couple of days later. He still has that pin. Almost 5 years later, I've moved onto other nicknames, but he's still my Prince Charming in every way. Just recently I saw these cuff links in a catalog from Red Envelope. I gave him cuff links as part of his wedding present two years ago, and don't you know I would have totally given him those if they had been available then!

Our stuff has arrived!
We are now completely moved to Kentucky. Now it's just a matter of making it all fit. We have a small storage closet off of our patio. Dan has already worked his tetras magic there. Lots of stuff left to unpack, but with Dan doing his thing, you know its going to be organized in no time.
I was told not long ago to sit, relax, and drink some water. Spoiled...that is the world you are looking for to describe me :)

Friday's Feast
My sister has so much fun with these, I'm sitting down to the table as well...
Appetizer - Have you been sick yet this winter? If so, what did you come down with?
Oh yeah! I got some awful flu the day of my b-day in December. I was so sick that we canceled the little shindig we had planned that evening. It took about a week to get over that with the cough lingering for a couple of weeks after. And then just recently, I got what I am referring to as "The Kentucky Plague."
Soup - What colors dominate your closet?
Pinks, browns, and black. I go through phases like Picasso.
Salad - How would you describe your personal "comfort zone"?
Around my family or my really good friends.
Main Course - On which reality show would you really like to be a contestant?
The plan is to first be on Amazing Race so Dan and I can travel the world and become America's Sweethearts. You know we would be the couple everyone loves. Then I would achieve high enough D-list celebrity so that I could be on Dancing with the Stars. I would win that and some how parlay that celebrity status into being a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance and the designers on Project Runway would have a challenge where they would each create a special outfit just for me!
Dessert - Which holiday would you consider to be your favorite?
My pal Hilary said it best years ago. My favorite holidays are Halloween and other people's birthdays.

Snowy Skies Smiling at Me
The forecast for a snow storm arriving this afternoon says there is a chance we may get four inches by tomorrow morning. This enough snow to apparently cause mass chaos. Most schools have been shut down since Friday for what little snow we might have had that morning. Kids were out again on Monday, and while there is maybe a couple of inches of snow on the lawns around town, the roads are fine. Dan called from work to let me know that any schools that hadn't already canceled classes for today were sending the kids home at 1pm before the massive snowfall started. I'm guessing they won't be in school tomorrow either? Needless to say, it's all a bit funny to us.
I'm feeling so much better! I decided to head over to the library near where we live this afternoon to stock up on some reading material for the "Blizzard of 07" (which is what the local news stations will be calling it I'm sure.) My sister has recommended Reading Lolita in Tehran. Well of course everyone else seems to be recommending it to their sisters as well, because practically all of them have been checked out around the region. Then I came across this list on Amazon. As I was looking through the list, I found quite a few of my favorites, some that I've always meant to read, and some of which I've never even heard mentioned among my bookish friends. So while I wait on my hold for RLIT to be filled, I'm going to be working my way through the list. First up is The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
My sisters and I have always loved reading. We used to get in to arguments over who got to read what first. We would sneak into each other's rooms and steal a book that the other one was still reading. I'm just grateful that Harry Potter didn't come out until we were out of the house. Otherwise, it could have gotten very nasty. Laura was very particular about there not being any creases in the spines of her books. I never managed to figure out how to read a paperback without putting a a crease in the spine. I'm sure Sally and I had our own silly rules as well. Books always make me think of my sisters.
As I was walked through the stacks wondering which books to get besides TPMJB, I had a bit of an epiphany. With what feels like all the time in the world until I get a job and with my new library card in hand, I have a unique opportunity to just read and read and read. Perhaps this won't happen again until I retire? Might as well take advantage of it. It reminds me of an episode of the "Twilight Zone" that I saw with my sisters and brother one summer when we were younger. It was one of those old, black and white episodes that are actually quite creepy. The details are fuzzy now, but it basically played out that there was an old man who was a book seller or a librarian. All he ever wanted to do was read, but he was constantly bothered by other people with questions about books. He was always complaining that there wasn't enough time to read. At some point, he wishes he was just left alone so he could read. He wants the rest of the world to disappear and that's exactly what happens. All of a sudden, it's just him and his books. He's so giddy that he accidentally does something that causes his glasses to crack. It's played up throughout the story that he's blind as a bat without his glasses. So the story ends with him surrounded by his books, but he can't read them anyway. He mournfully yells,"There was enough time!" as the last line of the episode, and it became a silly battle cry for the four of us. With that in mind, I figure I might as well put this vanilla jail cell to good use :)
Update on the movers: Our stuff should be leaving MA on a truck on Wednesday. Whoo Hoo! Still no word on when it actually gets here, but it's a very good sign!

I've got the low-down, dirty Bluegrass Blues
No job, no furniture, and I've caught the plague. Dan was telling me the other day how he kept running into other people in the bathrooms at his job who were in various stages of this stomach bug. So let's just say I wasn't the least surprised when I started to feel a bit nauseous on Thursday night, and by midnight, it was in full swing. Dan swooped in to comfort me as I balled my eyes out that I couldn't stop barfing. It was a lovely moment. Dan appears to be getting better and he's on day 5, so now I just have to wait until Tuesday to feel completely human again.
The moving company is giving us some problems. Nothing extreme, its just frustrating waiting for our stuff to come. I'm not going to go into detail simply because it ticks me off, and there is no point in stressing myself out about it.
No call about a second interview....yet? There was a snow day on Friday, so I'm hoping that got in the way of people being called for second interviews. I found a few other jobs and applied for them on Thursday. Fingers crossed.
I told Dan this morning, "I'm trapped in a vanilla jail cell, " although our walls are really more of a French vanilla. I pride myself on saying things that are rather dramatic and weird at the same time. Dan and I call it my "fake drama." I get to let off some steam, and we get to laugh about it.
In happy news, Dan and I were turned onto the show "30 Rock" by my sister, Laura. Chances are if Laura thinks something is hilarious, we will too. We've been watching it on nbc.com and there are quite a few episodes. If you have an odd sense of humor, check it out.

Garfy Wisdom
This is a pose that Dan likes to call "the lima bean."
This is a cat that I like to call "Mr. Potato Head." (Derived from "Sweet Potato," another of his many nicknames.)
This is a closet with mirrored doors that we are keeping open until Garfield realizes that there are no other cats on the other side and it's just his reflection. It just might stay open for the next 6 months.
Mish-mash update
To start things off, the interview went really well yesterday. I spoke with three different ladies who I would be working under, and the third one told me that they will be calling people back for second interviews with the VP for next week after they discuss things on Thursday. Then she pretty much said that I would be called back for a second interview. I look like a really good match on paper and I always interview well, so I'm confident. It seems like a great place to work, and that I could really grow in that environment. My goal today is to keep up the job search. I find that a job search requires the right combination of patience and diligence. If you are too patient, then you run the risk of not being proactive enough. If you are too diligent, you run the risk of getting way too emotionally involved in each cover letter and resume that don't create an interview.
I finished a really awful book yesterday. It was also a really good lesson that one should not buy a paperback in a grocery store, but I was desperate for something to read. The first review on Amazon sums up exactly what I thought of the book. I kept alternating between complaining to Dan about the book and reading him the really awful love scenes so we could laugh at them. You may ask why I kept reading (which Dan did quite often)? Well, there was a kidnapped kid, and I had to know if he was ok. I know, I'm a sucker. And the best part is that I have to read the sequel to understand the ending of the first book. Well played, Tami Hoag, but this little fish is not biting on that hook again.
I picked up I, Mona Lisa last night at Target. I really enjoyed Girl with a Pearl Earring a few years ago, so it seems like an obvious choice for me. I don't know how they'll compare, but it could be fun for a light read. Alas, the description for I, Mona Lisa still includes the phrase "bodice ripper." Oy-vey, but I have a feeling that after Night Sins, it's going to seem very modest and well written. I know, I know..."Get thee to a library," but Dan got a rather nasty stomach bug after his first day at work, so I spent most of yesterday afternoon taking care of him when he came home from work.
Dan hardly ever gets sick, and when he does, it's usually a bug that will wipe him out. I remembered that rice was good for an upset stomach and he ate some of that when he got home from work, but I called my mom to see what else I could feed him. And she came back with "brats," which really confused me b/c I thought she was telling me to feed him bratwurst. Well, for those of you out there like me who don't have that awesome "mom wisdom" yet, brats stands for Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast, and Soup. Cool, huh? Well Dan put the big nix on soup. We had soup the night before and he got sick not long after. The same thing happened with me when I ended up in the hospital in college from an awful stomach bug. I had the most delicious soup right before I got sick. Campbell's still makes it, but I can't even think about eating it almost a decade later. So for dinner, Dan had toast and half an apple with the skin peeled off. He slept enough last night to feel up to going to work today. He still not better, but he doesn't want to make a bad impression at his new job. He's a trooper....and I'm betting a rather dehydrated trooper at this point.

Wonderful Weekend
We had major plans this weekend: do even more shopping! Man, are we tired of shopping. We started Saturday by visiting Victorian Square for the Farmer's Market that was supposedly happening. What we found was a table with some garlic bulbs and another table selling dried herbs and soaps. Not really the bounty of winter produce we were hoping for, but we had a good time wandering around the rest of the Victorian Square Shoppes and peaking in windows because nothing was open yet. It was all very pretty and slightly pretentious. The kind of place where the name of the shop has absolutely nothing to do with what the store actually sells. It will be interesting to explore some more in the future. As for the Farmer's Market, we'll have to wait until March or April to see what kind of produce can be had once the season starts.
We headed over to Third Street Stuff (a coffee house and art/silly stuff shop) for a yard sale to promote some grass roots movement in Kentucky. We showed up right at 10 while everything was still being set up, so we got a couple of drinks (decaf coffee for Dan, mocha latte for me) and poked around the shop until we got bored. The coffee was really good and the store was filled with all sorts of merchandise with funny and inspiring quotes. We headed back over to the yard sale hoping to find a dresser. No such luck, but we did walk away with a nifty humidifier for $2.
We spent the rest of Saturday afternoon driving around Lexington just checking out the sights and then headed out of town towards Paris. One really cool collection of sculpture is right in downtown Lexington called Thoroughbred Park. We keep wishing we had the camera with us as we wander around, but the charger is packed up in our stuff which has not been delivered yet. The battery is running low so for now we're leaving the camera at home. Dan was very sad about this when we saw the line of sculptures of horses and their jockeys racing towards a finish line. He's really hoping to take a picture of him riding the jockey riding the race horse. Somehow, I think that might be frowned upon...
The land outside of Lexington is just absolutely beautiful and filled with horse and cow farms. We're enticed to look for a house out that way, but they all seem to come with at least 8 acres, which seems like a bit too much yard for just a cat. The road from Paris to Lexington is lined with one horse farm after another, and by "horse farm" I mean "giant, beautiful houses surrounded by state of the art barns and other horsey facilities on over 100 acres." We oohed and ahhed the whole way home.
We tried to keep Sunday as simple as possible due to Dan starting work on Monday. We hit the grocery store and the biggest Super Walmart either of us has ever seen. For dinner, I made the meal on the cover of Real Simple this month. We're getting back to healthier eating after spending about a month living on frozen pizza, hot pockets, and take out food. All of our spices are still being sent here with the rest of our stuff, so any recipes I've been planning to use have to be made with only one spice. It's a weird criteria, but when you have probably $100 in spices headed your way, you really don't want to duplicate. So planning menus has been kind of challenging, but I feel like I have risen to the occasion. So last night I'm making dinner and really in the thick of it, when I take a can of tomatoes off the shelf and realize that we don't have a can opener! We bought all this random kitchen stuff to tide us over but somehow forgot the can opener. Luckily Dan's dad gave him a Leatherman this past Christmas, and it has a can opener as one of the components - crisis avoided and our meal was really good. So thanks to Dan's dad for looking out for us even when he's not around. That Leatherman has come in really handy time and time again. And Dan got a big kick out of my yelling "We don't have a can opener!" in just about the most frantic voice I manage.
Tomorrow, I have an interview in the morning. I'm excited about the job, so I hope it all goes well. I'll keep everyone posted!

We moved here for the "warmer weather"
Its 20 degrees outside, but it feels like 6. Its warmer in MA right now where it's 24 degrees but feels like 12. Somewhere between the time that Dan and I left MA and arrived here, winter arrived. Silly us to think we were getting off easy. The pic is the view out the back of the walkway to our apartment.

Where does one find deer-skin leggings?
"A Southerner soon as a Northerner, a planter nonchalant and hospitable down by the Oconee I live, A Yankee bound my own way ready for trade, my joints the limberest joints on earth and the sternest joints on earth, A Kentuckian walking the vale of the Elkhorn in my deer-skin leggings..." --Song of Myself by Walt Whitman
If you'll check out the quote at the top of the blog, you'll see why I've named my blog after the title of one of Walt Whitman's poems. It wasn't too long ago that I stumbled across Part 16 of "Song of Myself" and thought to myself "Well, I really am part Southerner and Northerner at this point." If you listen to me talk, you'll understand. I sound pretty funny to everyone at this point. And if you think I have no accent, well then you clearly have been tuning me out.
So it just occurred to me today that Kentucky fell somewhere in that section of part 16, and well now...it's just plain creepy, isn't it? Kentucky comes right after being a Northerner. When I lived in Athens, I was right near the Oconee River. You'll never guess where the Elkhorn Creek is in Kentucky...runs right through Fayette County near Lexington. At this rate, I'll be in Lousiana, back in Georgia, and then head up to Newfoundland eventually. Brrr. All in good time, you sweaty-toothed mad man.
In the meantime, I'm headed out to find some deer-skin leggings, which is kind of a waste because leggings are so last fall!

Jumping on the Band Wagon!
Well, here I am being as trendy as can possibly happen. At least its not a My Space page, right? A few people mentioned that it would be a good idea to have a blog so others could keep up with our new adventures here in Kentucky. And that is starting to seem like a really good idea. There are so many wonderful things to share about this place. So starting now, you can check up on how we are doing right here in my little corner of the internet. So pull up a comfy chair (because I have a tendency to ramble) and let's get started!
Oh and this is all new to me, so don't be surprised it the layout of the blog changes from week to week. I'm learning as I go.
